UNDP MULTI-PURPOSE HALL a "2nd Lifehaus"
After the success of the 1st fully self-sufficient and sustainable Lifehaus in the village of Baskinta, UNDP reached out to conceive a child -friendly community center within the municipal boundary of Kharayeb in South Lebanon following the same environmentally friendly principles.
Client : UNDP
Location : South Lebanon, Kharayeb Village
Description : The UNDP project "Improving Living Conditions in Palestinian Gatherings Host Communities" aims at enhancing living conditions in Palestinian Gatherings in Lebanon and strengthening the resilience of the host communities. Palestinian Gatherings house some 120,000 host and recent Palestinian refugees in conditions marked by inadequate access to basic urban services and subsequent shelter conditions. UNDP hasb been working since 2013 in the Palestinian gatherings to improve WASH services, the equality of the built environment and socio-economic conditions.
In this context, the UNDP project established a child -friendly community center within the municipal boundary of Kharayeb in South Lebanon. The center will be managed by a local NGO to host children activities as well as other community interventions .
We focused on following an environmental approach of the project during its construction as well as its energy consumption during its occupation. We adopted locally harvested natural materials (stone, earth), scavenged tires, and finally imported wood. We designed the Hall following a passive bio-climatic approach to guarantee an all year comfortable temperature with no need of any artificial power-consuming source of heating or cooling. The Hall is water self-sufficient too through rainwater harvesting used for toilets than treated it for irrigation. It is power self-sufficient thanks to a small low-cost Photovoltaic Solar Panels installation.
